STMicroelectronics Introduces Two Central Airbag Collisions to Support Automotive Grade Applications

China, September 22, 2015 – STMicroelectronics (ST; NYSE: STM) introduced two central airbag crash sensors and perimeter impact sensors. The new product and airbag system chip and safety microcontroller form the overall airbag electronics solution to support the most demanding automotive grade applications.

The AIS1120SX single-axis and AIS2120SX dual-axis 120g in-plane MEMS accelerometers are mounted in the Airbag Control Unit (ACU), which is used to evaluate sensor data and trigger the appropriate safety restraint system.

Each sensor has two independent sensing channels for redundant detection and integrated slow and fast offset cancellation with precise temperature compensation for optimum stability. The built-in power-on self-test feature ensures reliability and runtime diagnostics and will help developers design to achieve the required level of functional safety. Both sensors offer a standard 400Hz signal bandwidth that users can overclock to 1600Hz.

STMicroelectronics has approximately 1,000 MEMS-related patents and patent applications worldwide, with advanced technology advantages to help integrate precision mechanical sensing units and 3.3V compatible voltage interface chips in the same package, and is equipped with a 14-bit digital SPI output.

The AIS1120SX and AIS2120SX sensors have an extended operating temperature range of -40°C to +105°C and are scheduled for volume production in the first quarter of 2016, using the SOIC8 monolithic disposable plastic package. The new AIS1120SX or AIS2120SX central crash sensor with peripheral impact accelerometers, such as ST's AIS1200PS mounted on the shock absorber and doorpost, allows automotive airbag system manufacturers to meet all of the system's functional safety requirements. Multiple DSPI (Deserial Serial Peripheral Interface) channels help optimize system and diagnostic control processes. In addition, the Fault CollecTIon and Control Unit (FCCU) and built-in self-test provide security for the development of Automated Safety Integrity Level (ASIL).
