Tokyo, Japan, August 7, 2017 - Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE: 6723), the world's leading supplier of semiconductor solutions, today announced that it has begun mass production of the first R-based automotive-grade Linux (AGL) software. Car System on Chip (SoC). AGL is an open source project that works across industries to develop a completely open software stack for connected cars.
Renesas Electronics believes that AGL is indispensable for expanding the in-vehicle software developer base. Renesas R-Car Starter Kit and AGL software are accelerating the development of in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) applications to help OEMs launch connected cars faster. Renesas Electronics is a Platinum member of the AGL project and is working with OEMs such as Toyota to promote the development of open source software. Renesas Electronics believes that by supporting these activities, it will not only help more Tier 1 suppliers to easily develop in-vehicle applications, but also help developers who are less familiar with embedded applications to accelerate IVI deployment.
Renesas Electronics' first R-Car series SoC, based on the AGL platform software, has been used in batches in the Toyota 2018 all-new Camry system. The model debuted in the US this summer, becoming the first Toyota model to use automotive-grade Linux (AGL) software in infotainment systems.
“Toyota and Renesas Electronics have been involved in the AGL project since the beginning. We have worked with Renesas Electronics and AGL to apply Renesas Electronics' R-Car Series SoC in the 2018 new Camry in-vehicle infotainment system. The development of the system has been promoted.” Toyota’s Minister of Internet Strategy and Planning, Mr. Murata, said, “Looking ahead, I believe that we will be able to further promote the open platform of industry standards and accelerate the development of new IVI systems.”
"Renesas Electronics is an active supporter of automotive-grade Linux, Linux Foundation and open source development, and actively participates in AGL project activities as a board member," said Dan Cauchy, executive director of automotive-grade Linux and Linux Foundation. I am very pleased to see that the products on the market have started to use AGL software, and I hope that AGL will be more widely used in the near future."
Renesas Electronics will continue to promote open source activities such as the AGL platform and work with our partner companies to lead the development of automotive information systems in the connected car era.
