Boost controller with extremely fast response time complements step-down DC-DC converter
October 30, 2013- ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ONNN) , which promotes energy-efficient innovation, launched two integrated circuits (ICs) that have passed AEC certification. These two ICs have a wide input voltage range and a wide operating temperature range, making them ideal for automotive power systems and interior applications.
NCV8876 non-synchronous boost controller operating input voltage range is 2 volts (V) to 44 V, with automatic wake-up and shutdown functions, it is designed to provide the minimum output voltage during the start-stop condition of the car to cope with the car battery voltage Sudden drop. When the supply voltage drops below 7.2 V, NCV8876 starts; once this voltage drops below 6.8 V, the boost operation starts and NCV8876 drives the external N-channel MOSFET. This device consumes only 11 microamperes (µA) of quiescent current in sleep mode, so power consumption is minimized. NCV8876 provides a variety of protection functions, including cycle-by-cycle current limit, thermal shutdown (threshold is 170? C) and intermittent mode overcurrent protection. Its peak current mode control and built-in slope compensation ensure device stability over the full voltage range. This also ensures that it is protected under current fault conditions, that is, when the current limit is exceeded, the power switch is turned off for the remainder of the switching cycle.
NCV896532 2.1 megahertz (MHz) switching frequency dual-channel buck DC-DC buck converter is designed for use in complex driver assistance systems integrated in today's automobiles. Both of its channels are externally adjustable (range 0.9 V to 3.3 V) and can supply up to 1,600 mA. The synchronous rectification function enables this device to improve system energy efficiency. The device also incorporates integrated soft-start, cycle-by-cycle current limit, and over-temperature shutdown protection functions, indicating that the device is ideal for applications in strict automotive environments. Both NCV8876 and NCV896530 support a junction temperature range of −40 ° C to 150 ° C.
Jim Alvernaz, Director of Automotive Products Division of ON Semiconductor, said: "NCV8876 is an off-the-shelf device that can automatically respond to low battery battery conditions. Other alternatives either require the design of a custom application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) or are based on discrete components. Provides a much slower response time. Because of the 2.1 MHz switching frequency, NCV896530 does not interfere with the AM (amplitude modulation) band because its two channels are 180 ° out of phase with each other, and the peak current demand on the voltage rail is greatly reduced. "
Package and price
NCV8876 is supplied in SOIC-8 package, and NCV896530 is supplied in DFN-10 package. The NCV8876 and NCV896530 are RoHS compliant, and the unit price for each 3,000-piece batch is $ 0.90 and $ 1.20, respectively.
